The Arizona Cardinals have reportedly been granted permission to speak with Sean Payton about their open coaching position, although Arizona appears to have competition for the sought-after coach, with the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos also receiving permission to interview the former New Orleans Saints coach.
Arizona may have something that sets it apart from the competition, however… Payton’s crush on Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray has been reported.
NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero tweeted Wednesday Payton is a “fan” of Kyler Murray.
His tweet said: “It was mentioned in a story from @RapSheet last weekend about the upcoming changes with the #Cardinals that Sean Payton was doing his homework in Arizona. He’s a fan of Kyler Murray and without the GM in place, it would be an opportunity to organize the whole operation.”

Interestingly, Payton, now a Fox Sports analyst, shared how he would use Murray for an October appearance on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd”, saying the solution for QB is to find “a package that suits his talents but also takes some of the pressure off him.” “.
“What would I like to see?” Payton added. “I’d like to see him have a better running game under mid. I’d like to see him pass the ball to another really good player and take a deep breath. I want to see how he has a few more throws and when I need those (jerky) plays that will come spontaneously through the red zone or third down.
“But I think if you’re counting on it every week, it’s a stressful job.”
Arizona Cardinals Coach Candidates:Who could replace Kliff Kingsbury as head coach?
Payton raved about Murray on the 2019 NFL team when he was still head coach of the New Orleans Saints and Murray was a prospect coming out of Oklahoma.
The Cardinals ultimately selected Murray with the #1 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
“Man, he’s explosive,” Payton said. “He’s one of those players, as you know, Madden used to say he never was. It’s so hard to rush him because he can turn right, play, left. You feel the balance he plays with… His movie is too good. Ultimately, when I speak, it’s too good. And I like him.”
