The jets they were historically poor on offense to finish that season.
New York hasn’t scored a single touchdown in the last three games. They averaged five points and a total of 231 yards per game that stretch.
According Rich Cimini z ESPNThe Jets are only the second team in the last decade to score zero touchdowns in three straight games (also in Washington in 2019). Cimini too recorded that New York is the fourth team since 2000 to score less than seven points in three consecutive games (2009 Browns, 2000 Browns and 2000 Ravens).
After Sunday’s end-of-season loss, Jets tight end Tyler Conklin was asked about the touchdown drought and what led to it. His answer was quite eloquent.
“I don’t know why we weren’t able to find the end zone,” Conklin told reporters. “I really don’t know what the problem is. It’s frustrating. That’s probably the only word I have for you right now.”
New York’s quarterback situation certainly didn’t help. Mike White wasn’t the same when he came back from broken ribs. The Jets weren’t doing so well when Zach Wilson was below mid, so he was benched for the second time, serving as a substitute in Week 18 when Joe Flacco took over. With some injuries to some quarterbacks, an injury-riddled offensive line, and a non-existent running game, it makes even more sense that New York couldn’t put more points on the board.
“It doesn’t feel real,” added Conklin, speaking of New York’s performance in the second half of this season after starting the year 7-4. I don’t know why we didn’t score touchdowns. It’s frustrating as hell to lose six in a row when you’d think we had pretty good chances of making the playoffs on a single point. Of course, we didn’t do what we had to do to make that happen.”
If it’s any consolation, Saleh believes this group could turn the tables around this time next year, building on a young core that has gathered invaluable experience over the last few months.
“I know what kind of team we have,” said Saleh. “I get noise from outside and all that. I’m getting the disappointment of a six-match unbeaten streak. On the positive side, we have an incredible core group of guys and I’m really excited for this off-season, really excited to see them start. We will have such an opportunity again. We have to finish.
