WWE SmackDown Results: The Bloodline Steals Sami Zayn’s Glow Against Kevin Owens

Roman Reigns challenged Sami Zayn to stand on his own two feet and then cut off his legs. Best friends Zayn and Kevin Owens, who had been separated, clashed in the main SmackDown match on Friday night.

Zayn sided with The Bloodline at Survivor Series, but his longtime friendship with Owens continues to put pressure on his alliance. Tasked with taking care of Owens, Zayn had a great fight with his former buddy in the main event of SmackDown. However, it seems The Bloodline didn’t quite trust Zayn to get the job done.

Gold was also at stake in Friday’s show. Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER successfully defended his title against his most physically imposing opponent: the monster of all monsters, Braun Strowman. SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair and legendary luchador Rey Mysterio were also home, and a new tournament was announced.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights from the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Zayn rises to the occasion only to be robbed of the moment

Zayn knocked on The Bloodline’s dressing room in the early evening and was greeted by Paul Heyman. Bloodline’s Special Advisor informed Zayn that no other member of the faction was here today. It was a directive from Reigns, who believed in Zayn enough to let him fly alone against Owens. This motivated Zayn.

Later in the evening, Owens was questioned backstage. Zayn paused and asked Owens if he was happy. Owens’ repeated interference with Bloodline’s business puts estranged best friends at odds. Owens argued that it was The Bloodline who made things personal by repeatedly suspending Monday Night Raw. Owens accused Reigns of arranging this match as well as a tag team match between former friends on December 30. Zayn rejected Owens’ insistence that he was being used and insisted that The Bloodline is Zayn’s adopted family.

Kevin Owens def. Sami Zayn by disqualification after The Bloodline intervened and attacked Owens. In an effort to prove his worth to the “chief of the tribe”, Zayn defeated his estranged best friend for most of the match. Blue Thunder Driver, an exploding suplex and a senton diving over ropes are just some of the great attacks Zayn conjures up. Owens had his own moments of control of the match, but Zayn generally turned out to be the better fighter that night. The match even drew chants of “This is awesome” from the Green Bay crowd. At the end of the match, Zayn landed a Tornado DDT which prepared him for the match-ending Helluva Kick. As Zayn was setting Owens up for the finishing blow, The Usos and Solo Sikoa attacked Owens.

After the match, The Bloodline continued to attack Owens. The Usos put Owens on the conference table and Sikoa jumped out of the barricade with a huge splash through the furniture. Zayn was clearly concerned about the actions of his associates – either that they prevented Zayn from proving his worth, or perhaps the severity of the attack on Owens.

WWE has done a great job of slowly stitching the bond between Zayn and The Bloodline and pulling the stitches just as carefully. Reigns seemed to have brought Zayn to failure. Owens turned out to be a formidable opponent, and Zayn was about to defeat an opponent that even Reigns struggles with. It turned out that Zayn rose to the occasion. The Usos and Solo Sikoa, well-meaning or not, robbed Zayn of the moment. After last week’s tensions with Reigns, it seems WWE is poised to separate the two sides, which will hopefully end up in a Reigns vs. Zayn in the latter’s hometown of Montreal, Quebec at the Elimination Chamber.
